Introduction
Wiemer studied (general) economics and graduated at the Free University in Amsterdam (1974). He obtained his doctorate in economics with a study of the youth labour market (Youth Unemployment. Dynamics of the Dutch Labour Market 1955-1988, Wolters-Noordhoff, Groningen) at the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen (1992). During his working life he specialised in the analysis of labour, particularly wages and employment, in a broad economic context.
After 25 years at the Groningen Economics Faculty he moved to the AIAS in 2000 to become its Managing Director first and later (2009) its General Director and stimulate (international) research. From 1996 to 2008 he co-ordinated the activities of the European Low-wage Employment Research network LoWER and various research projects related to the network, and performed in co-operation with network members and other colleagues, such as the Benchmarking and DEMPATEM projects. The focus was wage inequality and employment growth, product demand for low-wage services (primarily by consumers), the organisation of this production, the supply and training of labour supply and the interrelatedness of paid labour with other activities such as household labour or education, educational qualifications and job requirements. The LoWER netwerk organised workshops and conferences and published many books and reports, culminating in The Oxford Handbook of Economic Inequality. The LoWER network is unique for being funded for by the European Commission under the Fourth, Fifth and now Sixth Framework Programme. Click here for further detail about LoWER or DEMPATEM.
Since early 2010 he has been coordinating the major international research project GINI: Growing Inequalities’ Impacts (see gini-research.org)
In addition to this, he considers the evolution of the Dutch labour market and the national economy with a critical eye. This includes the pay differentials between public and private sector, the youth labour market, older workers, ageing and pensions, and the gender aspect of (part-time) employment.
He also holds the special chair of Labour Market and Inequality at the Amsterdam Centre for Inequality Studies (see amcis.eu).
