Perceived Employment Security of European Individuals: a Multi-level approach
Abstract:
The concept of Flexicurity has been receiving much attention now that the European Commission has accepted it as the new strategy to enhance adaptability and competitiveness of the European markets while maintaining the European social model. One of the most important concepts within the flexicurity approach is employment security, the security of having secure and continuous employment career, which may entail changing employers and jobs. But how do European individuals subjectively perceive their employment security? In addition, what individual and country level characteristics determine the subjectively perceived employment? Of the various individual level characteristics we focus on the impact of objective job security, measured here by contract types, on individual’s perceived employment security. In other words, do permanent workers always feel employment secure and do temporary workers always feel insecure? Are there cross-national variations in this relationship? To do this we use a multi-level model, where contextual effects are taken into account and individuals are considered to be embedded in countries. The data used for analysis is the 4th wave of the European Social Survey, which covers 31 countries for the year 2008/2009.
