Introduction

Paul de Beer (1957) studied econometrics at the Erasmus University Rotterdam (1976-1982). He achieved his Ph.D in economics at the University of Amsterdam in 2001 on the dissertation On working in post-industrial society (in Dutch).

From 1982 till 1993 he worked as a researcher for the Wiardi Beckman Foundation (WBS), the research bureau of the Dutch labour party.
From 1993 till 2001 he was senior researcher at the Social and Cultural Planning Office (SCP), a government financed research institute. Here he was responsible for the chapter on labour and employment in the biannual Social and Cultural Report and did quantitative research in the field of unemployment, poverty, income distribution, working conditions, the welfare state and industrial relations, both from a national (Dutch) and a cross-national perspective.
From 2001 till 2003 he was senior staff member of the Scientific Council for Government Policy (WRR), one of the main advisory bodies of the Dutch government. He co-ordinated reports to the Dutch government on international trade and on values and norms.
July 1st, 2003, he started working as Henri Polak professor of industrial relations at the University of Amsterdam. He is affiliated with the Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Labour Studies (AIAS) and De Burcht (Dutch Centre for Industrial Relations) (http://www.deburcht-vakbondsmuseum.nl/).
