Research programme

The AIAS research programme Labour-In³ addresses the three “In’s” of Internationalisation, Institutions and Inequality. Some examples of the 80 research projects are:

1. Investigate and explain the processes and consequences of internationalisation in labour markets and labour relations.

New modes of socio-economic governance (EU 6th Framework Programme; Contact: Prof. Jelle Visser).
The various roles and the accountability and legitimacy of interest association as co-policymakers are subject of investigation.
International reform monitor (Bertelsmann Stiftung; Contact: Dr. Wiemer Salverda). AIAS is Dutch correspondent in the ongoing project that monitors the process of innovative socio-economic policymaking and reform in legislation and collective
agreements for 15 OECD
countries.

2. Identify, explore and explain the evolution of institutions and mechanisms of institutional change and social learning.

Organisation, institutions and representation of union and employers (European Commission; Contact: Dr. Marc van der Meer).
An EU-wide study of the representativeness of employer and employee organisations directed by the Institut des Sciences du Travail of the Catholic University of Louvain-la-Neuve.
Solidarity and the Welfare state (GAK Institute; Contact: Prof. Paul de Beer).
In depth study of the social, psychological and philosophical foundations of social solidarity in relation to the future of the welfare state.

3. Examine and explain the causes, transmission and consequences of inequalities in formal and informal labour markets

European Low-wage Employment Research Network LoWER (EU, 4th, 5th and 6th Framework Programme; Contact: Dr. Wiemer Salverda).
The LoWER network brings together some forty European researchers of low pay and low skills; minimum wages and employment; gender, pay, part-time employment and skills.
Epicurus (EU 5th Framework Programme; Contact: Dr. Wiemer Salverda, Dr. Ada Ferrer-i-Carbonell).
How do preference identification and priority setting in response to changes in labour market status economically and socially affect the quality of life and well-being?
Woliweb (EU 6th Framework Programme; Contact: Prof. Kea Tijdens).
This project examines the socio-economic determinants of citizens’ work attitudes, preferences and perceptions, using data from the continuous survey at www.wageindicator.org.
