The study group Quality of Labour (1979-2002) was a study group of social scientific researchers in the field of labour issues. The secretariat was held by SISWO, Amsterdam Institute for Social Sciences (University of Amsterdam). The research that was discussed in the study group focussed around the triangle of technology, labour and organisation. Although there was a considerable diversity in subjects, the so called design-focussed research was a core subject. In the course of the debate more attention was paid to new production concepts and the institutional aspects of the issue how to design labour organisations.
The inter-university study group was on average 100 members strong. Besides discussing a selection of Dutch and Flemish research some international seminars were organised; a 110 meetings in total. Also, the study group initiated the publishing of several publications and journal articles. Among these publications were some contributions to the modern socio-technique debate and the labour process approach in the Dutch Journal ‘Tijdschrift voor Arbeidsvraagstukken’ (Journal of Labour Issues). The most important function of the study group was the scientific forum function. The study group also fulfilled an important function as an interface between science and society in the discussion with social groups and especially the labour union.
Archive
The reports and administration over a period of 20 years of this study group provides a portrait of an age of social scientific research and the debate in the field of the quality of labour. By means of the list of contents for this documentation the information is opened up to researchers and other interested parties.
The archive consists of eight document files. Files 1 to 6 consist of reports of the study group meetings during the entire period of 1979-2002. Files 7 and 8 consist of information about 11 international seminars and the program files of the study group including a Trend report Quality of Labour and the design-focussed research. The archive also contains some publications that have been supervised by the study group and some publications that are hard to obtain elsewhere.
